Membrane filtration for controlled product quality
Membrane cartridges are used where a defined retention level, microbial control, product clarity or sterile-grade filtration is required. Selection depends on the fluid or gas, membrane chemistry, micron rating, cartridge length, adapter geometry, seal material, operating temperature and sanitization or sterilization regime.
For replacement projects, the complete installed configuration should be identified before ordering. Similar-looking cartridges can differ in membrane grade, end connection, O-ring material and validated application.
Common membrane materials
The correct membrane chemistry is determined by the process medium, retention target, compatibility and sterilization requirements.
PES / PESU
Polyethersulfone membranes are widely used for water and beverage filtration because of their hydrophilic behavior, flow characteristics and suitability for fine or sterile-grade liquid filtration.
PTFE / ePTFE
PTFE-based membranes are commonly selected for sterile air and gas service and for applications requiring strong chemical and thermal resistance.
PVDF
PVDF membrane cartridges can be used in selected process and chemical duties where material compatibility and controlled retention are required.
What must be matched before replacement?
Confirm membrane material and the exact nominal, absolute or microbial retention specification.
10, 20, 30 and 40 inch formats are common, but the installed housing must be checked.
Code 7, 222/226 O-ring and bayonet configurations are not interchangeable by assumption.
EPDM, silicone and other elastomers must be matched to the process and sanitation chemistry.
Hot-water, autoclave and in-line steam capability depends on the specific cartridge construction.
Final sterile or microbial stabilization duties require the exact validated filter grade.

Is the micron rating enough to select a replacement?
No. Membrane material, validated grade, length, adapter/end connection and seal material must also be matched.
What is Code 7?
It identifies an end-connection configuration used on many sanitary cartridges. The exact OEM geometry and O-ring arrangement should be verified before replacement.
Can a 30-inch cartridge replace another 30-inch cartridge?
Not automatically. Two cartridges of the same nominal length may have different adapters, seals, membrane grades and operating limits.
Are all PES filters sterile-grade?
No. PES describes the membrane material; retention performance and validated application depend on the specific product family and grade.
